2012 was a year of grand performances for NMC: from our multi-night 10th anniversary to our five hour Cage Centennial Celebration; every event seemed broad and deep. As we kick off the new year, we're celebrating the other end of that spectrum: intimate performances dense with adventurous new sounds. NMC's roots have always been in chamber music, and this year we are featuring a concert series with small ensembles in carefully chosen, and sometimes unusual, locations.

This first concert of our series features two premiers by co-op composers Brent Fariss and Travis Weller at an elegant architect-designed studio in South Austin. Fariss' new work "UNITARD" explores the minutiae between two disparate instruments (snare drum and violin) and observing what happens as they become a single unit. The piece will be performed by Nick Hennies and Travis Weller. Weller's new piece "Turn on the light" for three percussionists features a set of custom-built resonant bells in a novel tuning. The piece was commissioned by line upon line percussion. Both pieces have been in progress for over two years, and weighing in at under an hour of music, this concert is beautifully distilled.
